Digital Learning & Library Services Volunteer: November 22nd On Wednesday November 22, 2023, from 8 am to 3 pm, the Digital Learning and Library Services Department need help at Allenbrook Elementary School's media center. You need to make sure you have transportation to and from the school. You do not have to work the entire day, but we do ask for you to commit to at least 4 hours. Please be sure to bring snacks and water. If you plan to work the entire day make sure you bring lunch. 2024N.C.AviationArtContest: Now-January 17th, 2024 NCDOT Division of Aviation along with FÉDÉRATION AÉRONAUTIQUE INTERNATIONALE is excited to launch the 2024 North Carolina Aviation Art Contest for students born between 2006-2017. This can be a fun classroom project or an individual student endeavor. More than 12,000 North Carolina students from over 750 schools have participated in the contest since 2013. Students are welcome to join in this fun project while competing for cash prizes. For more information, visit the link HERE.
Trophy Recycling Project: This service project consists of first researching places that will take trophies for recycling (there's some trophies with marble, granite, gold plated pieces, etc. on them). In addition, the student(s) would have to raise $ to ship them to the company (you might have to pay a small fee per box, etc., repack the boxes, take them to the Post Office, etc.). If you are interested in taking on this project, contact Ms. Bevenour in the Media Center.
Discarded Books Relocation: There are several books at the North Meck HS Library that need a new home! Your job would be researching & finding a foundation that accepts various novels & books & then send or take them to that foundation. Ms. Bevenour would be the person you will want to contact once you have found a new "home" for the books.
Prom Dress Drive: The prom dress drive has been a long withstanding project here at North Meck which collects gently used formal dresses for students that don't want to or can't purchase a formal dress for prom. Duties include advertising the collection of dresses, going through the inventory & displaying dresses on the garment racks, advertising the "shopping" days, & then re-boxing the dresses at the end of Prom season. Living Archives Projects The Living Archives Projectis an effort to archive the voices and experiences of Mecklenburg residents during the pandemic. We really want to here from our young patrons whose voices often go unheard when recounting historical events, how they were affected and the impact it had/will have on their lives. Participants are encouraged to submit their stories and experiences of their time during the pandemic in the form of written accounts, short stories, artwork, photography or audio. A local congregation offers a free after-school mentoring program to children in a community called Firefly. The program meets from 4-6 every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday that CMS is in regular session. (Wednesday is a shorter appointment-only session that focuses on one-on-one homework help and intensive tutoring). CMS Collaboration Group Project Opportunity Are you interested in helping to plan Charlotte-wide service among all IB schools? The CMS IB Specialist, Mrs. LaJoie, is looking for students from the five CMS IB high schools to create a small planning committee for service, targeting particularly MLK Weekend (January 14-16, 2023) and Global Youth Service Day (April 26-28, 2023). Amigos Tutoring Recruitment for tutors for the Amigos after school program at Huntersville Elementary has started. Amigos will run on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 beginning on October 4. One thing important thing to know is that you do not need to speak any Spanish, the kids all are fluent in English! Mayfield Memorial Communication Volunteer A non-profit is in need some highly motivated teenage volunteers to create and distribute flyers, among other duties. They're a community-based organization in Hidden Valley, so the ideal candidate would be someone who lives in the HV/Derita/Sugar Creek area. Spanish proficiency is a plus because all of our flyers and social media posts are bilingual. This would be an ongoing opportunity, at least one day a week. Newell Elementary Tutoring We have an opportunity to partner with Newell Elementary School to support their Kindergarten students in basic letter and number skills. Materials will be provided. This would be a great long term CAS project for a junior or senior! Potential tutors would need to provide their own transportation to Newell Elementary (325 Rocky River Rd. W., Charlotte, NC 28213) twice per week. Newell Elementary is approximately 20 minutes from North Meck. Tutoring will take place from 2:45-3:15 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Citizen Archivist Program Do you enjoy American History & enjoy having access to photos & documents from the past? Help contribute to the National Archivist database by becoming a photo tagger or document transcriber. Curious on how to use this for CAS? This could fall under both the Service & Creativity strands by providing relevant tags for each photo. You would document your contributions by taking screen shots of your dashboard, which keeps track of how many tags you have made over the course of the month as well as in total since your account was created. Instructions on how to create an account & navigate the process can be found in the following documents. NMHS Peer Mediation Club Do you want to become more involved at school? Are you interested in conflict resolution and/or the judicial system? Caterpillar Ministries Caterpillar Ministries is a non-profit in an economically challenged area of Huntersville. They provide many free services., one of which is tutoring. They would love to have you join them as a tutor fro Caterpillar Ministries. All tutoring sessions are virtual through Zoom. The student will share their Canvas screen on Zoom and you will assist with school work/homework. If they do not have school work, this organization provides supplemental materials to pick from to support what they are learning in their classes. Most tutors work with their students one or two times a week for 40-60 minutes. Students range in grade levels from Kindergarten to 12th grade. You may pick a grade level(s) you prefer to tutor. The supervisor is more than happy to sign off on your volunteer hours and write letters of recommendation for colleges and scholarships as well. The HOPE NOTES Campaign This initiative was created based off the need to continue spreading our message of HOPE in an environment where most events and opportunities of engagement with the community have been cancelled, due to the global health crisis. It also provides our volunteers with a way to help others without having to leave their homes. It’s very easy to help; just go to www.samaritansfeet.org/notes/ and write a note of encouragement. The organization will then print your note on a Hope Note card that will be included in one of their Hope Totes. These Totes with shoes and your card will be delivered to someone in need in the next few months.

Feed NC, formerly known as the Mooresville Soup Kitchen, welcomes volunteers to deliver meals to people who are home-bound. Davidson Farmers' Market There is a need every Saturday for volunteers. Duties include: Help setting up the market on Saturday mornings (tents, tables, and chairs); helping manage the Market Tent during market hours which includes answering questions, processing SNAP/EBT, and monitoring the market; helping breakdown the market once the market has ended. Join a growing network of young civic leaders! Participants meet approximately twice a month January-May with peers and community leaders to learn about the community’s history and growth, explore the city and its successes and challenges, and join a growing network of emerging student civic leaders. After completing YLCM, participants will continue their civic leadership as active leaders in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council. TreesCharlotte (Multiple Opportunities) 1. The NC Youth Conservation Corps, which has several opportunities to do conservation work over a weekend and earn 15 service hours and make $100. 2. TreesCharlotte is looking for somebody to be our tree mascot at our tree stores (and perhaps other events) this planting season. The TreeStores are typically on Saturday mornings. Our mascot basically works the crowd and gets his/her picture taken. It’s fun, but a bit grueling b/c you’re wearing a mascot costume. Students could earn about 2 service hours each time, and it’s super fun. Long Creek PTO High school students needed to help at monthly PTO meetings. They are held on the Thursday of the first full week of the month from 6:00- 7:30pm. Three or four students will be needed for each meeting. Duties include: monitor our students, help with homework, read to, or play games with them. Tutoring Program for Vietnamese Refugee Families The Community in Christ Lutheran Church in Cornelius needs your help being a tutor! The children they currently serve are Montagnards; mountain dwelling people from the Highlands of Vietnam who immigrated to the US in search of religious freedom. Although the majority of the students were born here, their families speak limited English, making help with schoolwork quite difficult.
